Adjusting button up pattern

I've making a button up shirt for my sister, but the neck is just a bit too roomy. The shirt has a collar stand, and I'm not sure how to adjust the pattern without messing up the proportions. I need help and I'm looking for tips on where to trim or reshape without throwing off the fit across the shoulders or chest. Looking forward to your replies

Hey, don't worry! You can usually fix this without a major pattern redo. Just adjust the collar stand and the neckline curve of the shirt. You can take a small amount off the center front and center back neckline curves of your shirt pattern pieces. This will shorten the overall neck circumference without affecting the shoulders. The other option is to shorten the collar stand itself. Try reducing the length of the stand pattern piece by a small, even amount from both ends. This will also reduce the neck circumference. I'd suggest starting with a small adjustment, like a quarter or half inch, and then baste it together to check the fit before sewing it on permanently.

If the neck feels loose, adjust the collar stand pattern. Shorten it a bit at the center back and front, just shave off 2–4 mm on each side, blending the curve nicely. This tightens the neck without messing up the shoulder seam or neckline.

Just remove the collar and collar stand from your mockup. then pin a strip of fabric along the neckline to close the gap until it sits the way you want. Measure that new neckline and transfer the change to your paper pattern. Make sure to adjust the collar stand and collar pieces so they match the new length. This preserves the fit across the shoulders and chest while tightening the neckline for a neater finish.
