Anyone got quick instructions for button band conversion?

I'm on a deadline with Simplicity 1779 and I'd like to skip the separate button band and just go with a cut-on/fold-over. The fabric is a drapey rayon crepe, and I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible without messing up the finish.

I've done a sewn-on band once before (on the ITS Bonn, which ironically has a cut-on option), but this direction feels trickier. I know it's basically redrawing and folding, but I'd rather not gamble on guesswork when the clock is ticking.

I'm planning to use pearl snaps instead of buttonholes, so that part is easy enough. What I need are the clear steps on how much to add, fold, press, and stitch so I don't waste time unpicking. Anybody got a method they've used that works clean and quick?

Basic method is pretty straightforward, and it should work well with a drapey fabric like rayon crepe. You will need to add about 2 to 3 in to the center front of your pattern piece. Once the main garment pieces are cut, you can start the fold.

First, fold the extra fabric inward by 1/2 inch and press it. This creates a clean edge.
Then, fold the entire band over by an additional 1 to 1.5 in so the fold line is right along the original center front line. Press this fold well.
From there, you can either topstitch the band down or stitch it from the back in the ditch.

If you're working with a fabric that shifts easily, such as rayon or silk blends, you may wanna stabilize the band area with lightweight fusible interfacing before folding and stitching. Are you planning to topstitch both sides or keep one edge clean for a hidden finish? If you're testing this on a muslin first, it'd be good to update the thread once you've tried it so others can learn from your result.

Thanks for the breakdown! I’m working on a loose summer blouse using rayon crepe and was thinking of adding a center front band like this. Do you ever interface the fold area for more structure or does the fabric hold up fine on its own?

Hey! For a fold-over/cut-on band on drapey fabrics like rayon crepe, I usually add about 1 to 1.5 inches extra to the edge so I have enough to fold. First, I fold it once and press it, then fold again to fully enclose the raw edge and press again. After that, I topstitch close to the inner fold. For snaps, I mark their placement before stitching so everything lines up nicely.
Using plenty of pins or clips helps keep the fabric from slipping, and this method usually gives a clean and quick finish without the guesswork.
