how to convert a sweatshirt into a jacket

i am a beginner/novice sewer and was wondering if i could make a plain long sleeve sweatshirt into a jacket. is this a good project for beginners and if so how would i start ? i apologize if this is a silly question, i would assume that the easiest way to do it is with buttons but it might look too makeshift and i do not want to mess up the sweatshirt and cannot afford to make a draft of the project, adding a zipper + a hood would be too advanced as well and the hood may require me to outsource a similar fabric to the sweatshirt. the picture is what i would want it to look like in the end (dosen't have to have hood) the original sweatshirt is a women's large.
