I can't believe I've only been sewing for 3 months, and I'm really struggling with neckbands LOL they feel like the trickiest part of the whole process. Any pros willing to share some tips or tricks? I'd love to hear your advice on how to nail this.

I struggled with neckbands too when I started last year making baby onesies for my niece. What helped me was quartering both the neckband and neckline before pinning, so the stretch is even. Also, slightly stretching the band but not the fabric as you sew keeps it from getting wavy. Using a walking foot made a big difference too.

@Coochang_ one useful tip I can give you is to make sure your neckband piece is slightly shorter than the neckline you're attaching it to.
You'll have to gently stretch the neckband to fit, which is what gives it that nice, clean look and helps it lay flat against your body. You'll get the hang of it!

The biggest game-changer for me was ditching the "just stretch and sew" method. I instead pin the neckband to the neckline at the center front, center back, and both shoulder seams. Once those are secure, I add a few more pins in between, making sure the fabric is distributed evenly without overstretching it. Then, I gently stretch the neckband just enough to lay flat with the neckline as I sew. Another thing to check is your seam allowance since sometimes just being a hair off can make all the difference. Keep at it, and you'll get it to click!

I do the same! Works well every time and seam allowance is critical!

I was taught to do it just a wee bit differently. Fold the neck piece in half at the seam, do the same with the other side, mark both those places with pins, then fold the opposite halves the same way and mark those quarters with pins. Then do the shirt neck the same way. You will have 4 pins in the neck piece and 4 pins in the shirt. Put the back pin where the seam is on the collar and match it to the back pin on the shirt then match the front two pins together, then the side seams of the collar and neck piece together. You can always add more pins in between the four original pins if the collar is really narrow or you are making little kids clothes. Do whatever you need to have the knit stretch out evenly between those four pins!
