Looking for feedback on digital pattern making workflows

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to better understand how people currently approach digital pattern making and pattern preparation.

I’m especially interested in the steps between a garment idea and a usable pattern: drafting, fitting, grading, PDF/A0 preparation, DXF files, and possible 3D preparation.

I’m not here to promote anything. I’m mainly looking to learn from people who actually draft, adapt, or use sewing patterns.

A few questions:

1. How do you currently create or modify your patterns?
2. What is the most difficult part of your drafting process?
3. Do you use digital formats such as PDF, A0, SVG, DXF, or CLO3D?
4. What kind of tool or feature would actually save you time without replacing your own expertise?

Hi, there is an application on Google Play, called Tailor Base, It generates the PDF printout of the bodice or skirt based on your measurements, and for bodice its about 20 measurements which makes the bodice really adjusted. I tried myself for different type of bodies - narrow shoulders, large bust etc. Works very well, almost no adjustmeents needed. Except the armhole would be a little deeper, but this can be adjusted after fitting.

I would like to share my personal experience and perspective regarding your questions.

1. On Pattern Making and ReferencesI primarily develop my patterns using books by Harumi Maruyama. When it comes to modifications, I analyze the pattern schematics from her "Pattern School" series. I compare these with YouTube tutorials on pattern making to guide my own drafting or replication process, ensuring that the distribution of the front and back panels is accurate.

2. On Mathematical ChallengesThe most difficult part of the drafting process for me is the mathematical calculation. Since I am not very strong in math, I am prone to calculation errors. To mitigate this, I pre-calculate and record all the necessary measurements before I begin the actual drafting.

3. On Digital Pattern Printing (CLO3D)I have also exported patterns from CLO3D in PDF and SVG formats. My main challenge is that my home printer only supports A4 size, which inevitably leads to slight inaccuracies when printing and assembling the pages. Even if I trim the margins as precisely as possible, the process of taping the pieces together often results in minute discrepancies compared to the original design.

Because even small errors can significantly affect the final fit during cutting and sewing, I spend a lot of time thinking about how to minimize these inaccuracies in CLO3D. As a hobbyist, I don't have access to an industrial plotter. However, I am curious to see if using a plotter would resolve these technical limitations and whether it would produce a pattern that aligns more closely with the digital original.

4. On the Efficiency of CLO3DEven without formal professional training, CLO3D is a great time-saver for identifying and correcting pattern issues. My workflow is as follows: I first draft the pattern on paper to identify potential problems. Once I have the core design, I recreate it in CLO3D to adjust the specific values that need fixing. This process significantly improves efficiency during the second mockup, as it clearly highlights the exact adjustments needed to achieve a better fit.

My AdviceMy recommendation for anyone working with digital patterns is to create a physical paper pattern first, sew a test mockup (muslin), and then translate those findings into a digital format. While you may already be familiar with this process, that first physical mockup is a valuable asset; it acts as the bridge between your paper draft and the digital design.

As I am in an environment where I cannot seek formal instruction, books are my primary teachers. I rely on Harumi Maruyama's books because they provide clear, standardized patterns that serve as a reliable foundation for understanding proportions and construction.

We usually start with accurate measurements and a clear technical sketch, then create or adjust a basic pattern. After that, a test garment is made so the fit, balance, seam lengths, darts, and armholes can be checked before grading.
The most difficult part is often keeping the fit and seam alignment consistent after making several adjustments. PDF and A0 files are useful for printing, while DXF works well when patterns need to move between different software. CLO3D can help with early visualization, but I would still check the pattern with a physical sample.
A tool that automatically checks matching seams, notches, grading consistency, and export settings would probably save the most time.
