Bias waistband on Vogue skirt pattern

My daughter asked me to help her sew a wrap skirt from a Vogue pattern, and the directions say to cut the waistband on the bias. I've been sewing long enough to know that usually leads to stretching and sagging unless it's stabilized, and this pattern doesn't call for interfacing. The fabric she chose is a light linen which makes me doubt the idea even more. I've never understood the point of putting the waistband on the bias in the first place. Has anyone actually had success with this?

You're right to be cautious. Waistbands cut on the bias can stretch out, especially with light linen. Some people add stay tape or thin interfacing, even if the pattern doesn't say to. Cutting on the bias can make it softer and more flexible, but it needs help to keep its shape. A waistband cut straight might work better for this project.

Yeah, I agree. Bias cuts give you that nice drape, but they can lose their shape, especially with linen. A straight cut is probably the way to go to be safe.

Thanks for weighing in. I hadn't considered stay tape before, but that might be worth testing on a scrap piece if my daughter still wants the softer look. The pattern doesn't mention interfacing, but I've seen other tutorials recommend lightweight fusible or tricot to keep things stable without making it stiff. Did either of you ever try stabilizing a bias waistband with interfacing and still get a clean drape?
