Serger newbie

Hi sewing friends! Just got my first serger and wow, didn't realize that threading it was a challenge. Trying to make napkins with rolled hems but struggling with tension. Grateful for any tips!

Hi @xstitch23! I agree, rolled hems can be tricky at first. Use fine thread if you can, and always test on scraps.

I have a Babylock and threading is a non-issue. The loopers thread automatically and you don’t have to worry about the prder in which you thread. I once had a Bernina serger and I grew to hate it simply due to the threading “issue.” Take your time, you may grow to love yours as much as I love my BabyLock!

Did the store you purchased your serger from offer free classes? They should have! Did it come with a manual? Look in your manual and it should tell you that you will most likely will need to change your presser plate, make sure you have the correct needle size in, and it should tell you how to set your tensions for a rolled hem for cotten, knits and chiffon if you are lucky. If not, go back to the dealer and have them work with you so you know how to do all the basics with your machine! I used to sell sewing machines and sergers, and we always gave lessons, no matter if it was a $200 or a $6000. machine. (I am aging myself quickly with that statement!). I also still tie my threads together when I am changing them because it is so much easier. Just remember to turn your tensions to zero before pulling your new thread through. Also, I have never used any thread except MaxiLock Serger thread, I stay away from Coats and Clark because it is very linty, JMPO. I have also used Wooly Nylon but prefer regular thread for napkins and placemats.
